Probably sooner than we expected (D40 was launched some three months ago), firmware for D40 and D80 are available.

Here are some of the fixes with the new 1.01 firmware:

  • The viewfinder electronic analog exposure display will indicate if the brightness of the subject exceeds camera’s exposure control. This will occur in Program auto (P) exposure mode, this will also occur in Shutter-priority auto (S) or Aperture-priority auto (A) exposure modes if the built-in flash is raised.
  • Effects of processing performed when the Long exp. NR item in the shooting menu is enabled have been improved.
  • When attempting to edit images, which have already been edited using a computer, using options in the D80’s retouch menu, the camera sometimes froze. Therefore, images that have been edited using a computer can no longer be edited using the camera.
  • Errors in English, Polish and Swedish menus have been corrected.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…” - I assume this is why no firmware was ever released for D50. Firmware are usually released either to fix bugs inside the camera, or to add new features to it.

This camera would be considerably more enticing if it including RAW (NEF) captures and a ‘commander’ mode for the built-in flash. I don’t believe it supports either.
